Georgetown Speedway

Georgetown Speedway was built in 1949 by Melvin L. Joseph. Its located on U.S. Route 113 about 1 mile south of Georgetown, Delaware. For two decades, in the 1960's and 1970's, it hosted harness racing. Attendance on some nights was boosted by fans coming via ferry from New Jersey. Purses were very low-in many years, they averaged just $500 per race. Horsemen in the Winter used Georgetown as a place to tune up their stock for bigger race meets in the Spring and Summer at other harness tracks in Delaware and Pennsylvania. After decling attendance and poor betting handles made operation difficult, the track closed in the mid 1970's. After sitting silent for a number of years the speedway was recently reopened in May 2006. The speedway was then promoted by Lou Johnson who is also a late model driver.

In 2008,and 2009 the track is being leased by Jay James, with his daughter Jessica as the promoter. They have scheduled about five events this year. Georgetown Speedway is 1/2 mile clay oval. Classes run at the speedway are Big Block Modifieds (Northeast style), Super Late Models, Crate Modifieds, Crate Late Models, Little Lincoln Vintage cars, and Vintage cars.

Last year saw several races with record crowds, and high speed action on the track.
